Indonesian government to impose standardization on steel imports

Indonesian government plans to impose compulsory standardizations on imports of all steel materials.

Accordingly, each offshore mill will be inspected for compliance with Indonesian National Standard (SNI) certification in order to obtain the stamp of approval of the National Accreditation Body of Indonesia (KAN), and related costs will be charged to suppliers' accounts. SNI, the only standard nationally applicable in Indonesia, was formulated by the Technical Committee and defined by National Standardization Agency of Indonesia (BSN), a subcommittee of KAN.

Moreover, at the ports of origin, there will be regular inspections by SGS, the global inspection, verification testing and certification company. SGS will be authorized to issue SNI certification reports for cargoes. BSN states that offshore mills in the market have started to collect all relevant necessary information via their contacts in Indonesia relating to future procedures of mill inspections.
