India’s scrap imports up 9 percent year-on-year in first five months of 2018

According to customs data, India imported 1.93 million mt of ferrous scrap in the first five months of 2018, 9 percent higher than the 1.77 million mt in the same period in 2017. The average monthly import volume of 0.386 million mt in the five month period is higher than the 0.365 million mt reported for the first four months.

In May, India imported 0.47 million mt of scrap. May 2018 imports are higher by 0.12 million mt compared to May 2017 when it imported 0.35 million mt, but 0.08 million mt lower than the 0.55 million mt of scrap imported in 2016. From countries of origin, India imported 0.43 million mt from UAE (22 percent), 0.20 million mt from the US (10 percent), 0.19 million mt from UK (10 percent), 0.13 million mt from Singapore (7 percent), 0.12 million mt from South Africa (6 percent), 0.06 million mt from Canada (3 percent), and 0.8 million mt from other sources (41 percent).

The 2018 five months import figure is 33 percent lower than the 2.88 million mt of ferrous scrap India imported in 2016.
