India’s Directorate General for Trade Remedies (DGTR) has initiated investigations into alleged subsidies in production of stainless steel by mills in Indonesia based on complaints filed by domestic stainless steel producers, a government official said on Wednesday, October 23.
The Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA), Jindal Stainless, and Jindal Stainless Hissar Limited have filed an application before the DGTR complaining that producers and exporters of stainless steel products from Indonesia have benefited from “actionable subsidies provided at various stages of production by the Indonesian government” and that such a subsidy program has been impacting the Indian stainless steel industry.
The complainants have sought anti-subsidy investigations and the levying of countervailing duties on imports of stainless steel products from Indonesia, the official said.
In its preliminary investigations, the DGTR said that “it has found evidence of “countervailable subsidies on production and export of such goods posing a threat to domestic industry” and hence has commenced detailed investigations to determine the size of the countervailing duty that could be levied on such imports of stainless steel products from Indonesia and remove injury to domestic producers, the official said, quoting from the DGTR’s notification on the launch of the investigations.
