The Indian government has tightened inspection norms for all metal scrap import shipments, a senior government official said on Thursday, July 2.

According to a notification issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce on Wednesday, all importers of metal scrap will have to submit a legal declaration that metal scrap shipments have been inspected prior to shipment and certify that there are no radioactive materials or explosives in the containers.

Metal scrap shipments will also be permitted only at notified ports which have installed explosive and radiological contamination detection scanners.

All importers will also have to submit bank guarantees of INR 1 million ($16,000) to the customs department by way of security deposit and liable for penalty for any violation or misdeclaration in the certification submitted, the DGFT stated.
