Sources have reported that the Development and Reform Commission of Hebei Province – the Chinese province with the largest steel production – is to release the list of names of the out-of-date mills in the province which are to be closed down first. According to the relevant data, the number of small-sized blast furnaces (<300 m3), small converters and electric furnaces (<20 mt) in Hebei is the largest in China. This time, Hebei Provincial Government is adopting a very strict stance on the elimination of out-of-date production facilities, aiming at finishing the task by the end of 2007. Meanwhile, Hebei Province will continue to accelerate restructuring steps and to reduce the number of steel mills, with the aim of improving production intensity.
