Global crude steel output for August 2005
China's 26.8 percent year on year growth in crude steel production in August helped pushed worldwide growth to 6.1 percent. Without China, global steel production shows a 1.8 percent decline. Data released by the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) show that global crude steel production amounted to 91.4 million metric tons (mmt) in August 2005. For the first eight months of the year, global crude steel production rose 6.9 percent year on year to 728.98 mmt. China, with production of 30.4 mmt of crude steel in August, was again the largest crude steel producing country. Year-to-date production reached 224.9 mmt, up 28.2 percent from a year earlier. Total production in the Asia region was 48.7 mmt in August, an increase of 17.7 percent on August 2004. Crude steel production in Germany amounted to 3.3 mmt in August, down 14.1 percent compared to the same month last year. Year-to-date production in Germany fell 4.3 percent year on year to 29.7 mmt. France produced 1.2 mmt of crude steel in August, 1.4 percent lower than the same month in 2004. Total European Union (EU) production for the first eight months of this year fell 3.4 percent year on year to 124 mmt. Crude steel production in the US was 7.7 mmt in August. This is a decrease of 8.4 percent compared to August 2004. Production in Canada was 1.2 mmt, 10.8 percent lower than in August 2004. Brazil's crude steel production fell 8.5 percent year on year to 2.6 mmt in August.
