Glencore temporarily suspends ferroalloys production in South Africa

In line with Covid-19 restrictions, Switzerland-headquartered international commodities company Glencore has announced that it has transitioned its ferroalloys operations in South Africa to temporary care and maintenance. The implementation date is March 26.

In South Africa, Glencore operates a chrome joint venture Glencore-Merafe Chrome Venture with a 79.5 percent share, and in particular vanadium assets in the Rhovan-Bakwena Vanadium Venture. In 2019, Glencore’s attributable production totaled 1.438 million mt of ferrochrome and 9,162 mt of vanadium pentoxide.
