Euro area industrial output up 0.6% in May from Apr

In May this year, seasonally-adjusted industrial production increased by 0.6 percent in the euro area and by 0.5 percent in the EU-27, as compared with April. In April, production fell by 1.1 percent and 0.7 percent month on month in the respective areas.
 
Meanwhile, in May this year seasonally-adjusted industrial production decreased by 2.8 percent in the euro area and by 2.3 percent in the EU-27 year on year. These figures are released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.
 
As compared to April, in May this year production of non-durable consumer goods increased by 1.7 percent in euro area and by 2.2 percent in the EU-27, while capital goods rose by 0.9 percent in both zones. Meanwhile, the production of durable consumer goods increased by 0.5 percent in the euro area and by 0.8 percent in the EU-27, while intermediate goods rose slightly by just 0.3 percent in both zones. Production of energy dropped by 2.3 percent in the euro area and by 1.7 in the EU-27, month on month.
 
Among the member states for which data are available, in May as compared to the previous month, industrial production rose in 13 states and fell in eight. The highest increases were registered in Portugal (+4.1%), in Sweden  (+2%) ,in Latvia (+1.9%) and in Germany (+1.5 %), while the largest decreases were seen in Lithuania (-16.3%), Slovenia (-3.2%), France (-2.1%) and the Netherlands (-1.6%).
 
As compared to the same month of 2011, in May this year production of capital goods declined by 1.9 percent in the euro area and by 1.4 in the EU-27, while intermediate goods fell by 3.9 percent and 3.3 percent respectively, durable consumer goods fell by 6.4 percent in the euro area and by 4.4 percent in the EU-27, while production of energy dropped by 1.6 percent in the euro area and by 2.5 percent in the EU-27. The production of non durable consumer goods fell by 2.1 percent in the euro area and by 1.3 in the EU-27, year on year.
 
Among the member states for which data are available, in May this year as compared to May 2011 industrial production rose in five states, fell in 15 and remained stable in the Czech Republic. The highest increases were registered in Latvia (+6%) and in Ireland (+4.4%), while the largest decreases were seen in Lithuania (-14.8%), Denmark (-9.2%), Italy (-6.9%), in Portugal (-6.7%) and in Spain (-6.1%).
