Euro area annual inflation rises to 1.8 percent in January

Annual inflation in the euro area was 1.8 percent in January this year, up from 1.1 percent in December, according to a report released by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities. In January last year, the annual inflation rate was 0.3 percent.
 
Meanwhile, in the European Union (EU-28) annual inflation was 1.7 percent in January, up from 1.2 percent in December. In January 2016, the annual inflation rate in the EU-28 was 0.3 percent.
 
The lowest inflation rates were observed in Ireland (0.2%), Romania (0.3%) and Bulgaria (0.4%), whereas the highest annual rates were recorded in Belgium (3.1%), Latvia and Spain (both 2.9%), and Estonia (2.8%). Compared with December 2016, annual inflation fell in two member states and rose in twenty-six.
