SteelOrbis has learned that Erdemir is going to build a new blast furnace at its steel works located in Karadeniz Eregli, Turkey. However, the new furnace will replace one of the company's two existing furnaces, and therefore will not result in a significant capacity increase. As a matter of fact, the older one of the two furnaces with a capacity of 1,150,000 tons per annum, was scheduled for relining this year, with a planned annual capacity increase up to 1,350,000 tons. Looking at the cost of the operation, the management of the company later decided that it would be better to build a new furnace, only 50 meters away from where the existing one is at the moment, but using most of the equipment at the existing furnace. The capacity of this new furnace is going to be 1,350,000 tons per annum, as planned previously.
