Luxembourg-based Duferco will acquire the last steelmaking plant belonging to the bankrupt Italian steel group Stefana, Italian labor union sources have stated.

In a seventh tender, Duferco's bid of €11 million beat three other offers - two made by Italian companies and one by a German company. Duferco will retain all the 139 workers at the facility located in Nave, Brescia, which includes two rolling mills  - one producing sections and the other producing wire rod.

Stefana’s other steel mill in Nave was bought last year by Italian long steel producer Feralpi for €10 million. Other former Stefana assets include an EAF-based plant in Ospitaletto, Brescia,  which was bought by supermarket chain Esselunga for €51.5 million last year with the aim of converting it into a logistics hub, and a billet plant in Montirone, Brescia, which was bought by Italian long steel producer Alfa Acciai for €2.805 million in June 2016.
