China-based Dongbei Special Steel Group has recently succeeded in producing 13 metric tons of M2 high speed tool steel. According to the test results, the granular carbides in the steel in question are of equal size and shape, meanwhile the average decarburized layer depth is even smaller than the standard level, i.e., one percent. Additionally, the drawing performance which is not conventionally included in the standard requirements was also included in the tests. Specifically, the sizes of each drawing pass are respectively 6.5 mm, 6.2 mm, 5.9 mm, 5.6 mm and 5.3 mm, and the total slip ratio has reached 33.5 percent. The actual product quality is equal to the Japanese steel quality for the same grade.
M2 high speed tool steel is a tungsten molybdenum high speed steel, which has high decarburization sensitivity and overheating sensitivity and high levels of hardness.
