Due to an ambiguous scrap law that has created some problems in Italy, a 5,000 mt scrap cargo was impounded at the port of Venice on July 7. This is not the first time such a problem has occurred in northeastern Italian ports.

During an inspection of the cargo classified by the seller as scrap, Italian authorities found some car parts which, considering a certain interpretation of the relevant law, have to be considered as waste rather than as raw material.

SteelOrbis has learned that the cargo was shipped by a scrap yard located in Sicily in the south of Italy and was destined to an unspecified mill located in the northeast of the country. Unofficial local sources say that the mill in question is AFV Beltrame, the leader in the Italian merchant bar market.

Both the seller and the buyer have been reported to the Italian justice authorities.
