Southwestern China-based steel mill Chongqing Steel inked a contract to build its planned 1,780 mm hot rolling line project. With a total investment of RMB 2.1 billion ($280 million), the designed capacity of this project is estimated to reach 2.8 million mt and is due to be put into production in April 2009.

Chongqing Steel also plans to build a second cold rolling production line in 2009. The producer previously constructed a cold rolling line in 2004 with a designed capacity of 320,000 mt.

Since Chongqing is the largest base for motorcycle production in China, the flat rolling projects of Chongqing Steel are mainly directed towards this market.
