According to the figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics, China's Consumer Price Index (CPI) grew in April by 3.0 percent year on year, a drop of 0.3 percent compared with the previous month. In the first four months of this year, consumer price inflation jumped by 2.8 percent compared with the same period last year.

The People's Bank of China (central bank) is constantly on the alert for increases in the CPI. If the index exceeds three percent, the bank is likely to increase the interest rate.
