According to the data issued by China's National Bureau of Statistics, China's consumer price index (CPI) hit 7.1 percent in January - the highest monthly level since 1997. The January figure was up 1.2 percent month on month.
Food prices in China rose strongly by 18.2 percent in January, while non-food prices rose by just 1.5 percent. In addition, the CPI rose by 6.8 percent in urban areas, compared to 7.7 percent in rural areas.
