The People's Bank of China (the central bank) issued an announcement on January 16 to the effect that it will raise the deposit reserve ratio for commercial banks by half a percentage point to 15 percent as of January 25, 2008.

The aim of the increase is to help implement China's stringent monetary policy, to strengthen liquidity control at the banks, and to curb excessive credit growth.
