China’s apparent coal usage down 1.6 percent in January-November

According to a new report issued by the China Coal Transport and Distribution Association (CCTDA), in the January-November period this year China’s large and medium-sized coal enterprises produced 3.05 billion mt of raw coal, down 10.0 percent year on year, while China’s apparent consumption of coal totaled nearly 3.49 billion mt, decreasing by 1.6 percent year on year. In particular, in the give period consumption of coal in China’s power industry, steel industry and chemical industry amounted to 1.67 billion mt, 570 million mt and 250 million mt, down 0.4 percent, decreasing by 0.6 percent and rising by 7.2 percent year on year, respectively.

In the January-November period of the current year, China’s coal imports and exports amounted to 228.69 million mt and 8.02 million mt, rising by 22.7 percent and 21.6 percent year on year, respectively. Meanwhile, in the given period coal shipments by Chinese railways amounted to 1.715 billion mt, down 5.7 percent year on year. In particular, in November this year, coal shipments by Chinese railways totaled 175 million mt, rising by 11.9 percent year on year, recording a third consecutive month-on-month increase.

As of the end of November (Nov. 30) this year, overall inventories of coal at China’s large and medium-sized coal enterprises totaled about 100 million mt, down 3.50 million mt month on month. Meanwhile, inventories of coal at China’s main power plants as of the same date totaled 69.86 million mt, down 4.9 percent year on year.
