China transcends US steel imports in first the 9 months

According to latest reports, Chinese total steel imports for the first 9 months of year 2002 have surpassed the imports into the US, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. China imported 23 million metric tons during this period while the US imports remain at a level of 22 million metric tons. The indications reveal that China is to remain the largest steel importer for the forseeable future, however the US being rather a consumer of higher grade steel at greater prices, might at the same time remain the place where the global steel policy focuses on.
