Xie Zhenhua, deputy director of China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), has stated at the 2nd China Metropolitan Energy Savings and Emission Reduction Conference that China has already achieved its emission reduction target for its 11th five-year plan period (2006-2010).
During the first four years (2006-2009) of the period in question, China reduced its standard coal consumption by a total of 490 million mt, while it cut its carbon dioxide emissions by 1.13 billion mt.
According to the preliminary estimates, Mr. Xie said, during the first three quarters of the current year the average energy consumption per unit GDP in China has declined by around three percent year on year.
By the end of 2010, China plans to reduce standard coal consumption per RMB 10,000 of GDP to less than 1 mt, down from 1.22 mt in 2005. In addition, water usage per unit of industrial added value is expected to be cut by 30 percent compared to 2005, while emissions of main pollutants will be down by 10 percent over the same period.
