Canadian building permits down 5.1 percent in January

Statistics Canada reported Monday that building permits issued in Canada in January totaled $5.4 billion-5.1 percent below building permits in December.

The value of building permits fell 13.3 percent to $1.7 billion in January in the non-residential sector. The decline marks the third consecutive monthly decrease as well as the lowest level since February 2009.

In the residential sector, building permits also fell from December to January but at a slower rate, decreasing 0.9 percent to $3.7 million in January following a 19.6 percent surge in December.
