Brazilian miner and iron ore producer Vale said this week it is seeking to further renew its railroad concessions, including the Carajas railroad, which transports iron ore from the company’s largest mine.

Vale said the contract extension should further renew the two existing concessions it has. SteelOrbis understands Vale’s railroad concessions would be renewed ahead of time for a further 30-year timeframe, before the 2027 expiration date.

Vale’s railroads include the Carajas iron ore railroad, and the Vitoria-Minas railroad. The Carajas iron ore railroad is a 554-mile railroad that transports iron ore, pig iron, manganese, coal, fuels as well as passengers. It connects Vale’s Carajas mine to its Ponta da Madeira sea port terminal. The Vitoria-Minas railroad is a 562-mile railroad used to transport Vale’s iron ore and third party cargo from the countryside of Minas Gerais state to Vale’s port of Tubarao, in the state of Espirito Santo.
