The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) of Western Australia has given conditional approval for Australian miner BHP Billiton's outer harbor expansion at Port Hedland, which is one of Australia's largest ports.

The outer harbor, including rail and stockpile facilities and a four kilometer jetty offshore of Finucane Island, will be built in four stages in eight years. The expansion will add an export capacity of 240 million mt per year.

The outer harbor expansion project is still subject to federal government approval.
