Australian miner BHP Billiton has announced that it has signed agreement with Chinese steelmaker HBIS Group for a demonstration of carbon capture and utilization technology at the latter’s steelmaking operations in Hebei.

“This collaboration between BHP and HBIS will provide a strong example for the industry to follow towards the wider deployment of carbon capture, utilization and storage and towards achieving major reductions in the carbon emission intensity of steel production,” Mike Henry, BHP’s chief executive officer, said.

In 2021, BHP signed a memorandum of understanding with HBIS to invest $15 million over three years to jointly study and explore greenhouse gas emission reduction technologies and pathways, as SteelOrbis previously reported.
