ArcelorMittal gets coal blocks for Indian projects

The world's largest steel company ArcelorMittal has announced that it has been allocated steam coal blocks for the first phase of its planned greenfield projects in the provinces of Jharkhand and Orissa.

The Indian government has allocated ArcelorMittal coal blocks on a sharing basis at the Sereghara block in Jharkhand and at the Rampia & Dip-side Rampia block in Orissa. The company has been allocated 83.33 million mt of steam coal in Jharkhand, whereas it has been granted 84.16 million mt in Orissa.

Commenting on the issue, ArcelorMittal's Vice President for Mining, Mergers and Acquisitions, M P Singh, said, "This announcement is a positive sign that the government of India and the state governments of Jharkhand and Orissa are supportive of ArcelorMittal and our commitment to these projects."

As previously reported by SteelOrbis, ArcelorMittal is planning the construction of two integrated steel plants in the provinces of Jharkhand and Orissa, each to have an annual production capacity of 12 million mt at the cost of a total combined investment worth $20 billion. The greenfield projects will constitute the company's first manufacturing mills in India.
