March US scrap prices in the Ohio Valley settled up $20-30/gt versus February values amid reports of continued low inventory and as industry concerns grew that import tariffs could reduce finished steel and scrap supply. Initial expectations for the local US scrap market were for an increase of $40-45/gt, even $50/gt in some cases, though attractive price expectations led scrap suppliers to send significant volumes to their domestic buyers, and as availability increased prices failed to move up as expected as demand from mills was more limited, market insiders told SteelOrbis.
