As reported previously, Italian rebar producers tried to reverse the downtrend of local prices in the previous two weeks, pushing up their offers to around €390/mt ex-works. This helped local spot prices to increase from €370-380/mt to the current €375-385/mt level in the past week, all ex-works. While local scrap prices have trended sideways, finished steel demand has remained weak. However, according to market sources, an Italian producer has sold 80,000 mt of rebar to the export market recently, specifically 50,000 mt to Canada and 30,000 mt to Tanzania, with delivery in July. This helped support prices in the local market. The price in the sale to Canada was around €385/mt FOB. As for the Italian wire rod market, domestic prices for drawing quality wire rod (SAE1006) have decreased further in the past week, from around €440/mt to the wider range of €425-435/mt delivered. According to sources, this price level should hold next month considering that July is the month before the traditional summer holidays. "Demand is weak but not terrible," commented one source.
