As of January 23, Chinese domestic semi-finished steel prices have increased week on week, while transaction activity in the market has been at medium levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.
During the given week, domestic semi-finished steel prices in China first softened but then moved in an upward direction, while average prices of semi-finished steel are now higher compared to one week ago. The rising trend of ferrous metal futures prices in China has provided support for domestic finished steel and semi-finished steel prices. Currently, some traders have started to build up inventories of semi-finished steel, thereby boosting prices of semi-finished steel in the spot market. It is thought that semi-finished steel prices will likely edge up further in the coming week.
