Wheeling Pittsburgh initiates construction of its EAF

Last Friday, Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. reported that they have initiated construction of the electric arc furnace (EAF), which will replace one of the two operating blast furnaces, at its Ohio plant. Construction, worth $114.9 million, is planned to end towards the end of 2004. The EAF has a new technology that will significantly reduce costs by enabling Wheeling Pitts to make production at the lowest cost as, apart from traditional EAFs, both scrap and liquid iron can be used for raw material requirements. Therefore, this project is very important for the company which exited bankruptcy protection on August 1, 2003 and is aiming to keep its competitiveness in the global steel industry.
