Warren, Ohio-based flat rolled producer WCI Steel Inc. announced this week they will invest $36.7 million in a new walking beam furnace at its hot strip mill. The walking beam furnace, which will replace the company's three pusher-type furnaces, will allow WCI to roll longer slabs (from 28 to 33.5 feet) and meet customer demand for 1'000 PIW coil sizes (compared to its current 850 PIW maximum) while reducing electricity and fuel usage. WCI president Patrick G. Tatom told press, "The walking beam furnace is the centerpiece of our strategic plan to increase margins, grow our custom product business and enhance our operational efficiency. Operating costs will be reduced through improved energy efficiency, better material yields and lower maintenance costs while our product offerings will increase due to the furnace's expanded capabilities." During construction, scheduled to begin immediately, the plant will operate with two of its existing three furnaces. Completion of the project is slated for January 2008.
