Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based US Steel has announced that construction of a new plant in Alabama will be postponed due to tough economic conditions.

The steelmaker's $450 million project, which is currently in the permit phase, would build two facilities for the production of a coke alternative for US Steel's Fairfield Works in Birmingham, Alabama.

US Steel spokesperson John Armstrong said that the timing had to be adjusted because of the economic slowdown. Armstrong said that the project would resume at a later time, though there is no specified timetable for when construction will start.
