German steelmaker ThyssenKrupp has announced that at 2.37 a.m. on September 25 the company's Beeckerwerth BOF meltshop produced its 200 millionth metric ton of crude steel.
The Duisburg-Beeckerwerth meltshop, which employs 734 people, has a capacity of 5.9 million mt of steel a year with an average heat weight of 265 mt. It was built 48 years ago as an LD meltshop with two converters and a third converter, two continuous casters, a converter gas recovery system, two degassing systems and two dust collection systems installed into the facility throughout the years.
Heinz Liebig, head of crude steel production at ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe in Duisburg, commented, "Without the enormous commitment of our employees over decades this milestone would never have been achieved - I am very proud that our people and our equipment have made this record possible."
The Beeckerwerth BOF steelmaking shop produces top-quality starting material for high-strength steel, ULC and IF steels as well as tinplate, sheet, skelp and quarto plate from the crude steel input produced at the meltshop.
