ThyssenKrupp AG officials announced this week that it is considering delaying construction and the startup of the largest portion of the $4.65 billion steel mill complex in Calvert, Alabama.
"Due to the current global economic situation, it is being considered whether to delay start-up of the Alabama project, currently scheduled for spring 2010," the company said in a management report.
The company also announced that it could be on track to lose more than $1 billion this year, after reporting a 25 percent decrease in incoming orders and a 16 percent sales decrease over the first half of its fiscal year.
Construction was delayed on the stainless portion of the Alabama complex back in January; although the company at that time stated that the carbon flat rolled production facility construction would proceed as planned and be complete by year-end, with first production slated for early 2010.
