Tehran Metals Exchange seek stability in steel imports

According to the report of Mehr News Agency today, Ahmad Sadeqi, the general secretary of the Tehran Metals Exchange stated that certain steel production units are on the verge of bankruptcy due to the unsystematic imports of steel. The performance of the Tehran Metals Exchange is described as positive over the past four months however further cooperation of the Commerce Ministry and its affiliated organizations with the exchange are looked for in order to stabilize the metals market and eliminate monopolies. The secretary emphasized the need for proper utilization of tariffs as a fundamental tool in controlling imports, adding that the balance between supply and demand has not been realized in the metals market due to improper enforcement of tariffs. Iran's raw steel production is expected to total about 4 million tons during the period of March 20, 2003- March 21, 2004, showing 8% increase in comparison with the corresponding period last year.
