After voting down a new contract with Steel of West Virginia, members of the United Steelworkers of America Local 37 went on strike late Friday night. Over 400 union members began picketing outside the company's office after rejecting the new contract Friday. The vote was done by secret ballot, overwhelmingly against the contract, 388 to 19. Healthcare benefits and pension are two of the major sticking points for union workers. Workers feel they work under adverse conditions and need good healthcare. Approximately 435 union members have been working since last Sunday without a contract. Union officials have been trying to negotiate a new contract since April.
