Mittal Steel Temirtau's workers strike for better wages

Up to 3,000 workers of Mittal Steel Kazakhstan's plant Temirtau held a demonstration on Sunday calling for better wages. The main demand of the workers was the payment rise from current $415 per month to at least $448 per month. The demonstration was sanctioned by the local authorities. The action received support of workers of Ukrainian Mittal Steel Krivoy Rog plant. The demonstration occurred after a ditch's slope collapsed on Friday, June 2, during maintenance works at the heating power station No.2, during which one worker was injured, another one died. The disagreement over the wages at Temirtau is not the first one Mittal Steel has experienced at its assets in post-Soviet zone. As SteelOrbis reported previously, less than a month ago, Mittal Steel had a disagreement about the wages at Mittal Steel Krivoy Rog, former-Kryvorizhstal, the company's acquisition in Ukraine, where the State Property Fund of Ukraine threaten to reverse privatization of the plant if Mittal Steel would not increase the wages.
