During a meeting organized by the Italian national packaging consortium CONAI, it was stated that in Italy from 1999 to 2010 the recycling of packaging made from steel, aluminum, paper, wood, plastics or glass engendered savings worth a total of €9.3 billion.

According to a press release issued by CONAI, in 2010 alone waste recycling-related benefits in Italy amounted to a value of €1.6 billion. Last year in Italy, all recyclable materials showed improvements in terms of volumes recycled. In Italy in the given year, the overall recycled volume of steel (not just steel used for packaging) increased by 30 percent year on year to 21.5 million mt. In other words, about 60 percent of Italian industry's steel demand was met by recycled material.
