India's JSW Steel will commence the construction of a $3.59 billion steel plant in October 2012 in the eastern Indian province of West Bengal with a first phase capacity of 3 million mt per year, a company official said on Thursday, July 12.

The project, to be implemented by JSW Bengal, a subsidiary of JSW Steel, has been delayed two years owing to problems related to land acquisition. However, the land acquisition issues have been resolved with the provincial government and an agreement on land is planned to be signed within the next 10 days, the official said.

The first phase of the project is scheduled to be completed within four years following the start of construction and in the second phase another 7 million mt per year capacity will be added within eight years after the first phase has been completed.
