Australian coal producer Whitehaven Coal Limited has announced that its Narrabri Joint Venture, which started production in June in northwest New South Wales, has loaded the first train of coal produced at the mine.

In addition to Whitehaven's 70 percent stake in the joint venture, Electric Power Development Co. Ltd, EDF Trading, Upper Horn Investments Limited and Daewoo International Corporation and Korea Resources Corporation equally share the remaining 30 percent.

When in full production, the Narrabri Mine is expected to produce approximately 6 million mt per annum of low ash, high energy, low sulphur thermal and PCI coal used for steel production.

Initial production using continuous miners will be 0.5-0.7 million mt per year.
