EU to take legal action against Chinese restriction on coke exports

European Union (EU) Commission had previously warned China about the restriction it brought on export of coking coal as many European steel producers, depending on Chinese coking coal have suffered from shortage of this raw material in recent times. As previously reported by SteelOrbis, China announced that it will increase the amount of coking coal by 1.5 million tons in 2004 from 2 million tons of coking coal that is allowed to be exported currently. EU officials stated that, they welcomed the Chinese recent decision however believing that it will not bring permanent solution to the problem warned China that, they will take the case to World Trade Organization (WTO) unless China lifts the restriction. According to the decision of WTO, EU Commission may impose economic sanctions on China.
