A spokesman for China's State Electricity Regulatory Commission has stated that the supply and demand situation as regards electricity is expected to maintain its equilibrium, but that some regions would on occasion suffer power supply shortages. As a result, coal and electricity supplies are to be given priority in order to ensure a stable power supply.

The State Electricity Regulatory Commission spokesman stated that a few provinces in eastern China, central China and the southern districts would be faced with electric power shortages during peak consumption periods, especially in the southern district where the electric power shortage during peak times may reach eight million kilowatts or so. This year central China may need to supply two million kilowatts of electric power to Sichuan Province, after a hydropower station dam in this province was damaged in the May 12 earthquake. In this context, other provinces in central China such as Hubei and Henan can expect to see greater power shortages.
