Turkey-based steel mill Colakoglu Metalurji A.S. has awarded an equipment supply agreement to German plantmaker SMS Demag for the construction of a compact hot strip mill in the scope of its plans to move into flat rolled steel production. The order in question comprises the supply of the mechanical, electrical and automation systems.
The new mill to be built in Gebze, near Istanbul, is designed to have an annual production capacity of three million metric tons of hot strip in a gauge range of 1.2 to 25.4 mm and in widths from 800 to 1,650 mm. The product range of the mill will extend from low-carbon steel grades to high-strength low-alloy steels, pipe grades and multiphase steels.
The hot strip mill is expected to go into operation in the second half of 2009.
