Coal imports on rise in Jiangsu

Customs sources in eastern China's Jiangsu province reported that local ports imported 706'000 tons of coal through the first four months of 2005. The tonnage represents a 72.2% year-on-year increase while the value of imports almost doubled. The large increase in imports is due in part to a decrease in domestic production brought about by Beijing's recent moves to try to standardize the domestic coal mines.
