The latest statistics released by the China Iron & Steel Association (CISA) indicate that the comprehensive energy consumption per ton of steel for the first five months of the current year dropped 4.4 percent year on year, while fresh water consumption per ton of steel declined by 8.7 percent.

With regard to the energy consumption rate, though the indexes showed a year-on-year decline, the total energy consumption of China's steel industry for the period in question climbed 10.4 percent because of the increased production, CISA executive vice-chairman Luo BingSheng remarked during an interview with Xinhua News Agency.

Mr. Luo also added that the situation regarding energy conservation is quite crucial for the Chinese steel industry, stating that China's out-of-date capacity which accounts for 20 percent of the total capacity for the whole industry records a 50 percent higher energy consumption level compared with advanced international levels.
