According to the 2008 Spring Report on China's Foreign Trade issued by the Ministry of Commerce, the country's imports and exports stayed in a normal range throughout the first quarter of this year. Meanwhile, the report estimates that Chinese exports will grow by 10 percent for the year 2008, with the trading surplus possibly declining to $200 billion.

"Against the background of our grim export situation, the major momentum for future export growth lies in machinery and electronic products," declared Liu Haiquan, Deputy Director of the General Department with the ministry.

As regards the rumored adjustment to China's export rebate and import tariffs, Mr. Liu said that he has not heard anything concerning a policy change.
