On August 27 the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) announced the finalization of the construction plans for China's second west-east gas pipeline. With the CNPC as the project's sole investor, this pipeline will convey gas from Xinjiang to satisfy the energy demand in the Pearl River Delta and the Yangtze River Delta.

According to the project plans, construction on the second west-east gas pipeline is to start in 2008. The pipeline is planned to be inaugurated in 2010 with a designed capacity of 30 billion m3 per annum. With the trunk line spanning 4,859 km, plus several branches, the total length of the pipeline will be over 7,000 km.
