Chinese giant steelmaker Baosteel has recently succeeded in developing 960Mpa high strength hot rolled steel for engineering machinery, thus filling a long-standing gap in the domestic market.

In recent years, China's demand for 960Mpa high strength steel for engineering machinery has grown continuously, and is expected to reach around 80,000-100,000 mt this year. Domestic demand for the steel variety in question, which is manufactured only by a few of the most technologically advanced steelmakers worldwide, had for a time to be met by imports.

Baosteel had previously developed 700Mpa high strength steel for engineering machinery, providing steady supplies to downstream industries. Closely following development trends in the engineering machinery industry, Baosteel commenced research and development on 960Mpa steel in 2007, successfully producing the product in question after six months of work.
