EU quota utilization levels of Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan

In the first eight months of 2007, Russia utilized 73 percent of the steel quota allocated to it by the European Union (EU), while Ukraine utilized 60 percent of its revised EU quota. On the other hand, Kazakhstan utilized 23 percent of its allocation.

According to the latest statistics, Russia exported a total of 1,666,703 tons of steel products to the EU in the first eight months of 2007. The quota allocated to Russia for 2007 is 2,273,000 tons.

Specifically, Russia used 83 percent of its hot rolled coil quota (770,055 of 931,000 allotted tons), 77 percent of its plate quota (151,195 of 195,000 allotted tons), 24 percent of its alloy sheet quota (24,032 of 100,000 allotted tons), 13 percent of its beam quota (5,934 of 46,000 allotted tons), and 64 percent of its wire rod quota (113,064 of 177,000 allotted tons).

With regard to Ukraine, it exported a total of 795,490 tons of steel products to the EU in the first eight months of 2007, filling 60 percent of its revised quota of 1,320,000 tons.

When the figures are broken down, we see that Ukraine filled 62 percent of its hot rolled coil quota (118,257 of 190,000 allotted tons), 75 percent of its heavy plate quota (290,575 of 390,000 allotted tons), 57 percent of its beam quota (28,447 of 50,000 allotted tons), and 58 percent of its wire rod quota (112,394 of 195,000 allotted tons).

Finally, Kazakhstan exported a total of 46,533 tons of steel products to the EU in the first eight months of 2007, filling 23 percent of its total quota of 205,000 tons.

Specifically, Kazakhstan filled 35 percent of its hot rolled coil quota (30,694 of 87,125 allotted tons), and 13 percent of its other flat rolled quota (15,839 of 118,000 allotted tons).
