EU quota utilization levels of Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan

In the first ten months of 2007, Russia utilized 82 percent of the steel quota allocated to it by the European Union (EU), while Ukraine utilized 72 percent of its revised EU quota. On the other hand, Kazakhstan utilized 27 percent of its allocation.

According to the latest statistics, Russia exported a total of 1,870,639 tons of steel products to the EU in the first ten months of 2007. The quota allocated to Russia for 2007 is 2,273,000 tons. (According to the recently signed quota agreement, the quota for 2007 will rise to 2.904 million tons).

Specifically, Russia used 92 percent of its hot rolled coil quota (857,000 of 931,000 allotted tons), 88 percent of its plate quota (172,341 of 195,000 allotted tons), 28 percent of its alloy sheet quota (27,764 of 100,000 allotted tons), and 72 percent of its wire rod quota (127,901 of 177,000 allotted tons).

With regard to Ukraine, it exported a total of 950,940 tons of steel products to the EU in the first ten months of 2007, filling 72 percent of its revised quota of 1,320,000 tons.

When the figures are broken down, we see that Ukraine filled 72 percent of its hot rolled coil quota (136,286 of 190,000 allotted tons), 80 percent of its heavy plate quota (310,347 of 390,000 allotted tons), 83 percent of its beam quota (41,540 of 50,000 allotted tons), and 82 percent of its wire rod quota (159,000 of 195,000 allotted tons).

Finally, Kazakhstan exported a total of 56,352 tons of steel products to the EU in the first ten months of 2007, filling 27 percent of its total quota of 205,000 tons.

Specifically, Kazakhstan filled 41 percent of its hot rolled coil quota (35,746 of 87,125 allotted tons), and 17 percent of its other flat rolled quota (20,606 of 118,000 allotted tons).
