EU quota utilization levels of Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan

In the first three months of 2008, Russia utilized 20.2 percent of the steel quota allocated to it by the European Union (EU), while Ukraine utilized 22.6 percent of its EU quota. On the other hand, Kazakhstan utilized 24.2 percent of its allocation.

According to the latest statistics, Russia exported a total of 611,497 tons of steel products to the EU in the first three months of 2008. The quota allocated to Russia for 2008 is 3,031,000 tons.

Specifically, Russia used 23.78 percent of its hot rolled coil quota (246,115 of 1,035,090 allotted tons), 26.22 percent of its plate quota (72,113 of 275,000 allotted tons), 6.77 percent of its alloy sheet quota (7,110 of 105,000 allotted tons), and 10.45 percent of its wire rod quota (33,856 of 324,000 allotted tons).

With regard to Ukraine, it exported a total of 305,279 tons of steel products to the EU in the January-March 2008 period, filling 22.6 percent of its revised quota of 1,353,000 tons.

When the figures are broken down, we see that Ukraine filled 14.99 percent of its hot rolled coil quota (29,190 of 194,750 allotted tons), 24.91 percent of its heavy plate quota (99,594 of 399,750 allotted tons), 18.6 percent of its beam quota (9,535 of 51,250 allotted tons), and 30.56 percent of its wire rod quota (61,079 of 199,875 allotted tons).

Finally, Kazakhstan exported a total of 49,631 tons of steel products to the EU in the first three months of 2008, filling 24.2 percent of its total quota of 205,000 tons.

Specifically, Kazakhstan filled 12.84 percent of its hot rolled coil quota (11,185 of 87,125 allotted tons), and 32.62 percent of its quota for other flat rolled products (38,446 of 117,875 allotted tons).
